While she did not receive much recognition at the time, Franklin went on to have a brief but very successful career, making key contributions to the structure of viruses before her life was tragically cut short by ovarian cancer in 1958. Franklin’s X-ray images of the DNA molecule provided the inspiration for the famous double helix structure.
